WOLFPACK — OPERATOR UNIT // FILE PARTIALLY CLASSIFIED

Mimic Cuttlefish

Living disguise — sole surviving carrier of an adaptive-skin graft, unsure which face was first

FIELD HISTORY

Project SEPIA was a defunct adaptive-camouflage program that pursued a beautiful, terrible idea: instead of dressing an agent as someone else, grow the disguise into the agent. Its researchers cultured a synthetic chromatophore lattice — an engineered tissue modeled on cuttlefish skin, laced with micro-muscular pigment cells — and grafted it over a volunteer's entire dermis. Seven volunteers received the graft. Six bodies rejected it within a year. The seventh is the operative now filed under the callsign Mimic Cuttlefish, and even that file lists the subject not by name but by case number: SEPIA-7.

The graft works better than its designers dreamed and worse than its carrier can bear. SEPIA-7 can hold a stored "face-set" — bone-shadow, skin tone, scars, the whole topography of a person — for days at a time, close enough to fool a spouse. But the lattice never fully sleeps. It ripples when they dream. It half-forms strangers from crowds they passed years ago. And between deliberate faces there is the resting null: a smooth, unfinished blankness that is what SEPIA-7 actually looks like now, and which they avoid in mirrors. The original face exists only as the oldest file in the set, and they no longer entirely trust that the file is accurate.

They stayed in the trade because it is the one place the condition is a gift instead of a haunting. Their tradecraft rule is absolute: never wear the face of the living without studying the debts that come with it — a face, they say, is mostly obligations. In the ready room they are quiet, observant, and given to dry gallows humor about identity that makes everyone laugh once and think twice. The persistent theory that they are also Deepwire annoys them, mostly, they claim, because it would be a lazy twist.

INTERCEPTED COMMS

  • Which face? Be specific. I currently hold nineteen, and two of them owe money.
  • The null isn't a mask. The null is the desk the masks sit on. Nobody wants to see the desk.
  • I wore a harbor customs officer for six days once. Longest six days of her life, I'd imagine. I filed her back carefully.
  • Am I Deepwire? Please. If I wanted to talk to you anonymously, you'd think I was your mother.
  • You study a face for the bones. You study the debts for the person. I only get caught when I skip the second part.

PSYCH PROFILE

Drives: Recovering certainty about the first face — or making peace with being the set instead of any entry in it

Frictions: People who ask them to "do" someone as a party trick; a face is a life, not an impression

  • unconsciously mirrors the posture and cadence of whoever they talk to longest
  • keeps a small mirror face-down in a pocket; checks it exactly once a day
  • the lattice ripples with mood — iridescent flickers when amused, still and matte when lying

KNOWN ASSOCIATES

  • DeepwirePublicly annoyed by the theory they're the same person; privately keeps a file on it
  • SableTrained for a season under his command and judged worthy; a trust almost no one earns
  • LynxThe one reader who spotted a face-set flaw; they've traded exactly one professional nod since
  • ChimeraThe only medic they permit near the lattice; her lack of horror was worth more than her skill
