WOLFPACK — OPERATOR UNIT

Deepwire

Static-masked informant — a ghost in the signal who is always right and never traceable

FIELD HISTORY

Deepwire does not exist. There is no personnel file, no clearance record, no enlistment date. There is only a pattern: at the worst moment of a mission, a channel that should be empty opens itself, a voice wrapped in vocoder static delivers exactly the warning the operative needs, and the channel closes before anyone can say thank you. The warnings are always correct. That is the entire verified biography.

The traffic itself is the mystery that keeps HQ's analysts up at night. It arrives on frequencies that are technically in use, threaded into the gaps of other transmissions — Lin Yao calls it "whispering in someone else's breath." The Spectre-Grid, which maps every ghost echo on the network, has traced Deepwire exactly zero times in dozens of attempts. Either the informant knows the Grid's blind spots better than its inventor, or, as Lin Yao privately suspects, the informant is standing somewhere the Grid is calibrated never to look: inside.

Theories multiply in the ready room. A conscience buried in the enemy camp. A former WOLFPACK operative officially listed as lost. Mimic Cuttlefish running the longest con on record. Deepwire feeds intel to Steel Cobra more than anyone, which some read as loyalty and others read as guilt. The voice never confirms, never denies, and never stays on the line one second past the warning. When an operative once demanded to know why they should trust an anonymous voice, the answer came flat through the static: "Don't trust me. Check the northwest stairwell anyway."

INTERCEPTED COMMS

  • You didn't get this from anyone. East corridor picked up two guards nine minutes ago. Find another way in.
  • There's a truck leaving the compound at midnight. What you're looking for is on it. That's all you get.
  • Someone in your unit talks in their sleep. Third bunk. Handle it quietly.
  • The meeting isn't at the dock. It never was. Check the cannery on pier six — and don't ask how I know.
  • This line goes dead in thirty seconds. The safe code changed an hour ago. It's the daughter's birthday now.

PSYCH PROFILE

Drives: Unknown — the warnings suggest someone paying down a debt one saved life at a time

Frictions: Direct questions about identity end the call; gratitude seems to genuinely unsettle them

  • always disconnects first; has never once been on the line to hear thanks
  • never uses names, only roles ("the medic", "your commander", "the one you trust")
  • static in the vocoder thickens when a question gets too close to identity
