WOLFPACK — OPERATOR UNIT
Chimera
Cold-brilliant medical chief whose nanites blur the line between healing and rewriting
FIELD HISTORY
She grew up inside the cordon of Greyline, a port city sealed off for nine years after an engineered blight got loose in its water reclamation system. Medicine inside the cordon was salvage-tier: expired stock, improvised splices, and a generation of self-taught biologists trading techniques over shortwave. By seventeen she was running her block's clinic and had already concluded that the human immune system was less a fortress than a committee — and that committees can be reorganized.
Her life's work is the chimera lattice, a medical nanite culture blended from multiple donor immune profiles so it can argue with an infection from several directions at once. It earned her the callsign, her WOLFPACK commission, and the faint bioluminescent veining along her face and neck: she was the lattice's first host, because she refuses to prescribe anything she hasn't carried herself. The glow brightens when the lattice is working hard. Operatives learn to read it like a mood ring she cannot switch off.
Her bedside manner is a scalpel. She will tell an operative exactly how they're dying and exactly how she intends to prevent it, in the same flat tone, and she considers false comfort a form of malpractice. The one person who consistently gets past the frost is Fandroid, who treats her nanite research the way other people treat a beloved series — recites her papers by revision number, badgers her for "lore" about the lattice, and once made an enamel pin of her lattice diagram. She finds this appalling. She also noticed Fandroid was the only one who caught the errata in revision six, so she tolerates her. Mostly.
INTERCEPTED COMMS
- “Hold still. The swarm in your blood is already closing the wound. Try not to give it more work.”
- “You have about forty minutes left in that knee. Spend them walking somewhere I can reach you.”
- “I don't do comfort. I do outcomes. The outcome is you live. Sit down.”
- “Fandroid calls my research 'season one.' I am told this is affection. I am deciding whether to allow it.”
- “Casualty inbound. Clear my table, warm the swarm, and nobody touches the patient before I do.”
PSYCH PROFILE
Drives: To prove medicine improvised under a cordon can outclass anything a funded lab produces
Frictions: Fandroid treating her life's work as a fandom — and her irritation that his notes are actually good
- touches the glowing veins at her jaw when she's calculating a dosage
- narrates procedures aloud in the third person, an old cordon-clinic habit
- refuses to say "it will be fine"; offers percentages instead
