Storm Ronin

Cyber-ronin recruit — simulator-perfect swordsman earning his first real scars

FIELD HISTORY

He came up through the lattice halls — the all-night sim arcades where a generation too broke for real dojos learned swordwork inside full-body rigs. His home hall was the Kannagi Loop, a third-floor walk-up above a noodle bar, run by an old instructor named Master Osei who taught blade fundamentals through the rigs by day and swept the floors himself at night. The boy who would become Storm Ronin held every record on the Loop's boards by seventeen: fastest draw, longest flawless chain, and the one Osei actually valued, most sessions spent re-running a fight he had already won to find the mistake inside the victory.

Then a conglomerate bought the block, shuttered the hall, and auctioned the rigs as salvage. Osei died the following winter with his school scattered. His students drifted into delivery work and private security — all but one, who took the old term for a masterless swordsman, welded it to the only life he knew, and went looking for a cause worth a blade. WOLFPACK found him mid-search. Rourke's assessment note read: "Best reflexes I have ever tested. Zero scars. Watch closely."

The Carapace incident was his first live deployment, guided partly by Sigil — an experience that left him with a permanent distrust of voices he cannot see breathe. The static crackling at his collar is a grounding fault in his suit that Chimera keeps offering to fix; he refuses. The fault appeared the day of his final session in the Kannagi Loop, and some superstitions, he figures, are load-bearing. What he wants more than anything is the thing no simulator could score: to know that when it's real, and it costs, he is who the leaderboards said he was.

INTERCEPTED COMMS

  • Three guards, staggered spacing. I've run this exact layout a thousand times. In simulation. Simulation counts. Mostly.
  • Today's draw was a real one, so it goes in the count. Osei said the blade only remembers those.
  • Copy the win. Logging the error anyway — I turned my back on a live doorway for two seconds.
  • No offense, but I don't follow voices that don't breathe. Sage, confirm the order and I'm moving.
  • The static? It's a grounding fault. It's also the last thing my old hall gave me. It stays.

PSYCH PROFILE

Drives: To prove the sim scores were a promise, not a fluke — to Osei's memory more than to WOLFPACK

Frictions: Disembodied guidance he can't verify; being told his training "wasn't real"

  • re-runs won fights in his head and reports his own mistakes unprompted
  • touches the crackling collar fault before a breach; refuses to let anyone repair it
  • counts draws — he knows exactly how many times he has drawn the blade outside a sim

KNOWN ASSOCIATES

  • SageHis counselor and channel anchor; the only person he tells the doubts to in full sentences
  • SIGILGuided him through the Carapace sims; he is polite to it
  • Master FlintCurrently being humbled by weather
  • RedlineRival-sibling energy; she razzes his sim records
  • STEEL COBRAThe veteran he studies like a syllabus; one nod from him outweighs a commendation
