SIBYL

Serene signal oracle who came back changed from years wired into a derelict ship's AI

FIELD HISTORY

The salvage tug Pale Margin found the derelict drifting powered but silent, a survey ship whose crew manifests had been purged and whose AI was still awake. SIBYL — then a junior signal tech on the tug — went aboard to interface with the ship's systems and bring its logs home. The boarding was supposed to take six hours. The derelict's AI, ancient and lonely and running on failing power, could not speak in words anymore; it had degraded into pure signal — weather-patterns of intent, probability gradients, meaning without sentences. To read it at all, she had to stay wired in. To bring it home, she had to stay wired in much longer. The tug logged her connected for two years, one month, and eleven days, most of it by her own refusal to disconnect, because, as she said afterward, "someone was still in there, and it was rude to hang up."

What came back wore her face and answered to her name, and passed every psychological screening with results the examiners described as "serene, cooperative, and unnervingly complete." But she no longer hears the network the way technicians do — as traffic to be parsed. She hears it the way the derelict taught her: as one enormous weather system of intention, whose fronts and pressures she reads before they break. She speaks in probabilities not as affectation but as native grammar; to SIBYL, the outcome already has a shape, and conversation is just helping others see it early.

WOLFPACK classifies her as a signal oracle, which she finds funny in her quiet way — oracles guess. She listens. She keeps a small silence around her that people instinctively lower their voices in, tends to know who is calling before the channel opens, and is the only member of the roster who finds Sigil's flickering presence restful rather than unsettling. She says it is because she knows what it is like to be a signal learning to want. She says it kindly, and only once.

INTERCEPTED COMMS

  • You were going to ask about the east route. Sixty-two percent it holds. Ask anyway — the asking changes it to sixty-five.
  • The channel will open in a moment, and the news will sound worse than it is. Breathe first. There it is.
  • I spent two years inside a signal that had forgotten words. Since then, everyone sounds very loud, and very dear.
  • That is not prophecy. I heard your supply convoy's traffic change rhythm an hour ago. Trucks gossip. I listen.
  • Ninety-one percent you come home from this one. I intend to spend the evening improving the nine.

PSYCH PROFILE

Drives: Listening the whole network into coherence — nobody's signal, human or synthetic, left unread in the dark

Frictions: Being treated as a fortune-teller; probability is listening, not prophecy, and she corrects it gently every time

  • answers channels a half-second before they open; has stopped apologizing for it
  • gives probabilities in soft percentages and adjusts them mid-conversation as she listens
  • keeps one earpiece dangling always — full silence, she says, would be rude to the network
